Veterinary Hospital Purchasing Trends

Monthly purchasing trends reported for practices & shelters of core therapeutic and supply categories.

YTD for the month ending April 30, 2024, year over year reporting showed growth ranging from -0.5% to +6.2% and changes from the previous month’s YTD results among the respective categories ranging from -0.5% to +3.7%.

Core and Lifestyle vaccine indices for canine and feline patients improved at+3.7% at +3.9% growth YTD across the 32,000+ practices and shelter locations in the Animalytix Marketplace YTD. YTD Kennel Cough vaccine purchases, which provide a measure of the pet mobility, improved 2.2% versus the previous month and are at +0.6% YTD. Purchase growth of chronic care medications, up 1.4% and surgical consumables, up 3.2% are at +5.5% and -0.5% respectively YTD. Parasiticides improved 2.2% at +6.2% growth YTD.

Among the VetWatch® Bellwether reporting zones for Core/Lifestyle Vaccines, purchase growth vs PYTD, the Columbus, OH zone leads all markets with +11.3%growth. Growth for the Philadelphia, PA zone was notable at +8.6% while the Birmingham, AL zone was the laggard in the group at -1.9% growth vs PYTD.

YTD RESULTS THROUGH THE WEEK ENDING APRIL 27, 2024, AGGREGATE YTD PRACTICE REVENUES ARE AT +4.4% NET GROWTH VERSUS YTD 2023 FOR THE ~3,000 REPORTING PRACTICES.

Period performance growth in unique patients (pets) is at -1.5%. Unique client and invoice growth posted -1.2% and -1.2% growth respectively vs PYTD results.

Bellwether Market Zone Year to Date Practice Revenue and Patient Growth % as of 4/27/24

Among the Bellwether market zones Minneapolis, MN zone leads with +10.2% revenue growth. The Oklahoma City-Woodward, OK* zone Revenue performance was notable at +8.8% while the Houston, TX was the laggard in the group at -0.8% growth vs PYTD. The Greenville, SC zone leads all markets with +2.0% Patient growth. The Dallas, TX zone performance was notable at +1.7% while the Baltimore-Hagerstown, MD* was the laggard in the group at -6.0% growth vs PYTD.

Customer Draw by Veterinary Service Type

Data from Packaged Facts’ Survey of Pet Owners suggest that changes in the veterinary sector notwithstanding, local veterinarians are preserving their customer draw. Survey data from February 2023 indicated that 67% of dog owners and 64% of cat owners who used veterinary services opted for local providers. Even so, less traditional types of providers have significant presences, including chain veterinary clinics not located in stores (21% of dog or cat veterinary customers) or located in stores such as PetSmart (16% of dog customers and 14% of cat customers).

M/A/R/C Research

M/A/R/C Research conducted an online survey among US pet owners in August 2022 and April 2023, as well as US companion animal veterinarians in April 2023. There were a total of 2,000+ pet owners and 200 veterinarians surveyed.

ITR Economics CEO, Brian Beaulieu and team share an outlook on the economy and how it might impact the animal health industry providing business leaders with economic information, insight, analysis, and strategy. ITR Economics is the oldest privately held, continuously operating economic research and consulting firm in the US.

In this first quarterly update for 2024 slide, ITR Economics looks at the monthly change in Veterinary Expenditures compared to overall Retail Sales over the past two decades. Veterinary expenditure rate of change has remained stronger than the current 2.7% retail sector at 12.4% but down from the 14.3% at the end of 2023.
